First Generation

Status as  a “First generation” student is defined by having parents who have not completed a four-year college degree. Although research shows that First generation students may require additional support in the transition to college, the types of supports that First generation students benefit from–more explicit instruction, connections with faculty and student groups, etc.–also support traditional students.  Therefore, programs that aim to support First generation students can benefit the wider campus community.
